About Maddie’s Fund

Maddie’s Fund is a family foundation created in 1994 by Workday® co-founder Dave Duffield and his wife, Cheryl, who have endowed the Foundation with more than $300 million. Since then, the Foundation has awarded more than $208.9 million in grants toward increased community lifesaving, shelter medicine education, and pet adoptions across the U.S. The Duffields named Maddie’s Fund after their Miniature Schnauzer Maddie, who always made them laugh and gave them much joy. Maddie was with Dave and Cheryl for ten years and continues to inspire them today.

Maddie’s Fund is the fulfillment of a promise to an inspirational dog, investing its resources to create a no-kill nation where every dog and cat is guaranteed a healthy home or habitat. #ThanksToMaddie.


Before migrating to foundationConnect, Maddie’s Fund used MicroEdge GIFTS Classic for its grants management. The Foundation implemented the solution in 1999 and continued to use it without maintenance or upgrades until 2015.

Throughout these years, the Foundation received grant applications via email or hard copy. All of these applications were entered in an Excel spreadsheet, a manual and time-consuming process that took staff weeks every grant cycle. The same spreadsheet was used for the review and management of the grant application, and subsequently, approved applications were entered in GIFTS Classic.


Maddie’s Fund started to evaluate new systems in 2015. In order to simplify and streamline processes, as well as improve system access in and outside the office, a cloud-based system was a top priority.

The Foundation evaluated several systems, but chose the Salesforce platform and foundationConnect because system maintenance did not require extensive technical knowledge. A foundationConnect partner worked with the Foundation to implement the new solution.

Once the Foundation started using foundationConnect, it soon experienced efficiencies throughout its grants processes. For example, staff moved away from paper and achieved a nearly paperless office in less than five months.

The Foundation also launched the Grantee Portal, which allows for applications to be received directly through the portal. The time spent on entering applications in an Excel spreadsheet was cut in half since moving to the cloud.

Migrating to the Salesforce platform and foundationConnect has also streamlined the Foundation grant processes and made it easier for staff to access documents whenever and wherever.
